A Classic Olympics in the Making

Never before have Olympic sporting events been so easily accessed around the host city. The vast majority are taking place in venues locate in or near the very center of Paris. You can walk or cycle (more on that later) to most of the Olympic sites. There are only a few exceptions — some events are happening at Versailles, at Roland Garros stadium, and in Tahiti. (That's right, Tahiti. Thinking surfing and sailing.)

It kicks off with the first stadium-less opening ceremony in the history of the Games. The banks of the Seine River will be the venue, if you will. Olympic athletes will be ferried along a 7-kilometre route while tens of thousands of fans line the river banks, cheering them on. As the Olympians disembark at the newly-renovated Trocadero plaza, overlooking the Eiffel Tower, 30,000 fans will be there to bid them welcome.

Versailles

Chateau de Versailles, once home to French royalty, seems like a natural place to host horse riding events. Olympic equestrian competitions dressage test and jumping will take place on the manicured gardens of Versailles, next to the Grand Canal.

Hotel de Ville & Hotel des Invalides

The Paris Olympic marathon commences in the heart of Paris at the Hotel de Ville and will follow the historic route of the French peasants (mainly women) who marched in protest to the royal court at Versailles, notching up the French Revolution. That part of the route goes out to Versailles before the marathon turns around to end near the Tomb of Napoleon at Hotel des Invalides.

Pont Alexandre III

Cycling time trials take place on one of the most beautiful bridges of Paris — Pont Alexandre III. The Beaux-Arts bridge, a marvel of 19th-century engineering, was inaugurated for the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, It connects the Champs-Elysées with the Hotel des Invalides.

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is not being left out of the Olympic Games. The adjoining Champs de Mars will be filled with sand for the beach volleyball competition.
