Wagner's Ring Festival At The Paris Opera

One of opera's grandest spectacles comes to Opéra Bastille in November, when the Paris Opera stages all four works in Richard Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Gods, giants, warriors, Valkyries, forbidden love, betrayal, and a ring with the power to rule the world fill a story told across four separate operas.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day

Beaujolais Nouveau has arrived!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is the official arrival of the season's first wine — bottled only weeks after harvest and released with theatrical precision on the third Thursday of November. Restaurants pour the bright, fruit-forward Gamay alongside seasonal dishes, and wine shops announce the new vintage in their windows and hold tastings.

The tradition dates back decades, fueled by a spirited race to deliver the first bottles to Paris. The wine is young and made to be drunk soon after release, but much of the fun has always been in the fanfare: opening the first bottles, tasting the new vintage, and joining an annual ritual that begins on the same day across France.

Grande Halle de la Villette at night – La Villette

For three days, the Grande Halle de la Villette becomes a vast food market, with French producers and artisans behind the counters and chefs cooking nearby. Taste oysters opened to order, farmhouse cheeses, chocolates, charcuterie, Champagne, wine, and other products, then watch dishes being prepared during cooking demonstrations and chef appearances.

The Salon du BON is devoted to the people who grow, make, and cook food, with tastings and masterclasses running across the weekend. Its temporary Bouillon restaurant serves three meals a day at communal tables, using ingredients sourced from producers taking part in the festival.

Armistice Day

It was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the Allies and Germany signed the armistice agreement near Compiègne, France. The agreement ended the fighting on the Western Front, and November 11 became Armistice Day, a national holiday commemorating those who died in World War I.

The national ceremony takes place at the Arc de Triomphe, where the President of France lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Military standards and guards of honor surround the tomb, and the Flame of Remembrance, first lit in 1923, is rekindled beneath the arch.

Photo Days – Photography Across Paris

For almost the entire month of November, photography escapes the gallery walls and turns up across Paris in museums, artist studios, laboratories, and even collectors' apartments. Photo Days ranges from historic photographs and documentary work to fashion, landscapes, portraits, and new work by French and international photographers.

The fun is following the photographs around the city. Photo Days organizes neighborhood routes connecting several exhibitions, along with artist meetings and special visits, so an afternoon of photography might take you from a Left Bank gallery to an artist's studio or an address you would otherwise walk straight past.

Le Grand Tasting – A Tour Of French Wine

Hundreds of French wines are opened beneath the Louvre during Le Grand Tasting, a two-day wine festival at the Carrousel du Louvre. Taste Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Rhône, Loire, Alsace, Provence, and Beaujolais wines, moving from famous houses and châteaux to smaller domaines you may never encounter at home.

Winemakers and representatives pour the wines and talk about what is in the glass, so this is a chance to ask questions as well as taste. For a closer look, masterclasses seat small groups for four to six wines from a particular producer or region, with each tasting explained by the people who know the wines.

La Toussaint – All Saints' Day

Chrysanthemums fill Paris cemeteries for La Toussaint, when families visit the graves of relatives around November 1 and leave flowers at their tombs. Père Lachaise cemetery, Montparnasse, Montmartre, and the other Paris cemeteries receive thousands of pots in shades of yellow, bronze, pink, red, and white.

The connection between the flowers and remembrance dates to the end of World War I. In 1919, President Raymond Poincaré called for France's war memorials to be covered with flowers; chrysanthemums were in bloom in November and became closely associated with remembrance. The tradition continues each autumn, and the City of Paris plants thousands of chrysanthemums in its cemeteries for La Toussaint.
