Visited by more than 7 million people a year, the Louvre Art Museum is very popular — and very crowded! But there are ways to reduce your time in line, and spend more time looking at the art.
We like to book guided tours for the most crowded Paris museums. And a Louvre art museum tour makes the most of our time inside the many wings and galleries.
On the tours you make a beeline to the three most famous artworks and get a quick Paris art history lesson from your English-speaking guide.
You stop at the Venus di Milo, then over to Nike of Samothrace and of course, Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, Mona Lisa. Then your visit the many other famous works of art.
With the most of the tours you're able to continue exploring the Louvre Museum on your own once the tour ends, without having wasted time in lines. To us, that's worth the price of the tour. Here are the tours we've selected…
On this prioritized guided tour, you are guaranteed to skip the line at the Louvre and get inside and go directly to the three most famous works or art.
While you're on the tour your get a Paris art history lesson from an English-speaking expertguide.
Once the 2½ tour concludes, you're able to continue exploring the Louvre Museum on your own, without having wasted time in line-ups!
You can choose from small group tours (15 people) or large group tours (50 people). We'd just as soon pay the lower price to get in with the larger group, and then wander off on our own!
"This tour was excellent! If only just to skip the lines it was well worth it, but the guide was fantastic. So much knowledge and passion… he really ensured we saw the best highlights of the museum – both the touristy and non-touristy ones. This was definitely the highlight of our trip and we will do the same again!"
This one also focuses on three of the most famous works in the Louvre — Mona, Venus and the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
But you also have time to visit many other lesser-known works.
The things we like about this tour are —
• It's small.
• It's conducted by an expert English-speaking guide.
• You can stay in the museum as long as you like once the tour ends.
• You can opt for a private tour with up to four of your closest friends.
The 4-hour tours start at 10:00am (a private tour starts whenever you want)every day except Tuesday, when the museum is closed.
This 3-hour, popular skip-the-line walking tour for 20 people is offered morning, afternoon and evening at the Louvre art museum.
On it you cover more than 2000 years of the history of art, starting with the ancient Greeks.
You visit masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance and view the royal crowns of French emperors and kings. And, of course, you'll also spend time with the Big Three – Venus, Nike and Mona!
"The guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and had lots of interesting little facts…. The tour was much more then just the main pieces, and gave a real experience of the museum."
The Louvre Art Museum itself offers a 90-minute tour in English.
Called Louvre's Masterpieces these staf-conducted tours start at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm every day the museum is open.
However, the web page for the tours seems to be available only in French! It's also not always clear which of the tours (if any) are in English.
